Andy Roddick is through to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open after his straight sets victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 7-6(6), 6-1.
The first set was fairly comfortable for Andy. The German had a bright start and was producing good shots in the rallys, but at 3-2, Kohlschreiber pushed a forehand long to give Andy a break point. Another backhand wide saw Andy take a commanding 4-2 lead. Andy’s own serve was very strong throughout the set as he served it out with two unreturnable serves and an ace.
Kohlscreiber had his own band of German supporters who were loud and vocal for their player, encouraging him to take the second set to a tie break. The tennis leading up to the breaker had been entertaining, with one particular fancy shot from Kohlscreiber between the legs drawing a smile from Andy and cheers from the crowd. The tie break was close with both players exchanging mini breaks. At 6-5, Kohlscreiber saved one set point with a smash, but at 7-6, Andy’s strong volley saw the German produce an error to give Andy a two sets to love lead.
The third set began with a little drama, as Andy’s shoe split, and was thrown up to trainer Doug Spreen to be glued back together. Not to be deterred, Andy immediately broke Kohlscreiber’s serve with a super forehand pass. At 3-0, Andy’s intensity increased as he secured a double break with a stunning forehand return. At 5-1 and serving out the match, Kohlscreiber made a last stand, but Andy’s serving proved too much.
Fist pumps to his entourage and throwing towels into the crowd showed Andy’s delight. In the quarter final he will face either Nikolay Davydenko (RUS) or Guillermo Canas (ARG).
