Andy has progressed to the fourth round of the Australian Open with his three sets victory over Austria’s Jurgen Melzer 6-2, 6-2, 7-5. Andy proved too much for Melzer to handle in the first set, as some big serving and good baseline play saw him take the advantage. A powerful forehand on set point gave Andy the early lead.
The second set was much the same, with Melzer sending a backhand long to give Andy the lead at two sets to love.
Melzer increased his intensity in the third set. At 3-3, with Andy’s new coach Dean Goldfine making copious notes, Melzer hit two beautiful volleys to deny the world number two the break. Andy’s own serving was consistent though, and with some super forehand and backhand passes, set himself up with a break point at 5-5. Melzer’s frustration continued as he hit a forehand drive in the net, leaving Andy to serve for the match which he ended with an ace.
Andy will now face Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber in the fourth round. The exit of Tim Henman (7) ended their potential meeting in the quarter finals.
Andy’s shared his delight with the crowd at moving into the next round as he waved and applauded to them and greeted Mwelzer with a warm handshake at the net.
Andy’s play was strong throughout the match as he recorded 22 aces and 41 winners.
