Moya Wins Davis Cup For Spain

Spain has won the Davis Cup as Carlos Moya defeated Andy Roddick 6-3, 7-6(1), 7-6(5).

Before the match the crowd was roaring as the entertainer once again did a great job. Many American fans were having their picture taken with the Davis Cup trophy in the background. The Netheads were painting last minute banners, handing out little US flags and were preparing to scream and shout loudly for Andy. The Spanish crowd was there in mass as the Stadium was filled to capacity.

Andy started slowly and Moya dominated the on the slow red clay. Andy fought back but could not convert on two break points and Moya took the first set 6-2.

Andy went up a break early in the second set but was unable to hold on as Moya executed some deadly drop volleys. The second set tie break saw some outstanding play by Moya as he stormed to a 7-1 victory as Andy’s backhand found the net.

The third set contained much drama particularly in the tenth game as Andy saved match point with an ace. At 3-3 in the tie break the momentum swung in the Spaniard’s favour for the last time as Andy hit a backhand long. At 6-5 and match point to Moya, the number one Spaniard hit a whopping serve which Andy was unable to return.

Moya fell onto his back in celebration, as Andy congratulated the Spanish and then hurriedly left the court. The Spaniards celebrated with their magnificent crowd bouncing Moya in the air and doing several laps of honour and spraying champagne.

After the match Andy commented “I got off to a slow start but from then on it was pretty much dead even.”

Talking about his break point opportunities, “I had my chances but just didn’t convert them…I felt I had to go for my shots.”

Andy will leave with his head held high as he stated, “I’ll kick myself a little bit, but I’m not ashamed…I’m not going to walk out of here with my head down.”

In compliments for the Spanish victors, “You have to give them their due, they did a great job.”

Congratulations to both team for reaching the Davis Cup Finals!
