Andy Roddick is getting his fair share of tiebreaks and close matches at the Tennis Masters Cup this week. After battling Tim Henman in two tight sets and Marat Safin in two tiebreaks, he was due a less intense match, but when playing a player as committed as Guillermo Coria, that was not likely in today’s match.
Although Coria recently underwent shoulder surgery, he was still determined to make a run here in Houston. In the first set, he played to his strengths, retrieving balls and keeping rallies alive, refusing to surrender three break points, sending the first set to a tiebreak.
Andy was able to secure a mini-break early and took the breaker and the set 7-6.
The second set began more one-sided, as Andy took a 5-0 lead, but the Argentine battled back winning the next three games, even breaking Andy’s serve for the first time. Andy then served out the match at 6-3.
On his way to today’s victory, Andy passed the 1000 aces in one season milestone, a feat only accomplished by two other players, Goran Ivanisevic and Pete Sampras.
Andy remains undefeated here in Houston without dropping a set. Tomorrow he takes on No. 3 seed, Lleyton Hewitt with an estimated starting time of 12:30 p.m.
Go Andy!
