BANGKOK (Reuters) - Andy Roddick eased into the second round of the Thailand Open on Wednesday, winning 6-1, 6-4 without remotely approaching top form.
There was little to impress a crowd of nearly 10,000 as he defeated Arvind Parmar of Britain, an opponent who lost in the qualifying rounds but was given a place in the main draw following an injury withdrawal.
The American’s serve was in good order, which was fortunate in light of his erratic play in any rallies that developed.
Seven of his 11 aces came in the first set, but Parmar more than held his own in the second. He fired five aces and held a break point to lead 4-2, which Roddick saved in spectacular fashion with an airborne smash.
“It’s a good thing if your game is in and out and you win one and four,” said Roddick, who arrived in Bangkok from his Davis Cup duties in America just 24 hours before his match.
“The first set went pretty routine. The second set it was closer, but in two of the service games that he held I think I had break points. I’m just happy to get through.”
Paradorn Srichaphan did not disappoint the home fans, beating Marco Chiudinelli of Switzerland 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Both were evenly matched in the strong baseline exchanges, with the fourth seeded Thai holding a slight edge with his big backhand. But it was Chiudinelli who faltered under pressure at the end of the first set, hitting three double-faults.
In the second set it was Srichaphan who again earned the advantage by breaking to lead 5-3, but he was unable to serve out the match, dropping his serve for the only time before dominating the tiebreak.
Marat Safin enjoyed a smooth passage into the second round, beating Israel’s Noam Okun 6-2, 6-3 without facing a break point. He served well and his forehand caused Okun a lot of problems.
Having recently engaged Roger Federer’s former coach, Peter Lundgren, Russia’s Safin is waiting until the end of the season to really get down to work with him.
