Some Added Tid-bits About Joachim “pim Pim” Johansson

Pim Pim Johansson is in his first ever Grand Slam Quarter final, but is still unknown to many people, so here are a few extra facts:

Age - 22, Height 6′6, Weight - 198lbs

Nickname - Pim Pim. Obtained when his older brother couldn’t say Joachim when he was little and used to call him Joa-pim; it stuck.

He has played Davis Cup for his country twice, with a significant victory in the doubles with Jonas Bjorkman against Australia in Round One this year. That victory gave Sweden a 2-1 lead over the defending champions and led to their eventual 3-1 victory. He played his first DC tie also against Australia, a dead rubber in Malmo last year where he played a very impressive match against Aussie veteran Wayne Arthurs, although eventually losing in a third set tie break. It was the first good look many people got of Pim Pim, and we were all impressed by what we saw.

Exploded on to the scene by winning his first ATP career title in Memphis this year against Kiefer in the final. This Swedish iceman hardly cracked his face when he lifted the trophy and will bring that cool demeanour to the lights of Arthur Ashe tonight.

Off court he has close links to a certain Australian world number five. Pim Pim goes out with Lleyton Hewitt’s younger sister, Jaslyn Hewitt (also a tennis player), and has done for a few years. The Hewitts are often in attendance at Pim Pim’s matches, and have been all this tournament.

Pim Pim has been friendly with Andy Roddick since juniors. They played doubles together in juniors and reached the final of the French Open Junior Event eventually losing to Lopez and Robredo. Andy beat Pim Pim in a couple of big matches on the junior circuit, the semis of the Australian Open juniors and the final of the 30th Banana Bowl, so certainly some scores to settle tonight.

Pim Pim has a very powerful serve and a forehand which is as hard if not harder than that of Andy’s. They will certainly have big battles tonight in that department.
