Andy Roddick (2) vs. Rafael Nadal

US Open men’s defending champion Andy Roddick faces his first test of the tournament against the latest flashy Spanish prodigy, left-handed sensation Rafael Nadal, ranked No. 49 in the world.

Roddick breezed in the first round, picking apart Scoville Jenkins, who was playing in just his first Grand Slam match.

But Nadal presents all sorts of problems for Roddick, equipped with a blistering southpaw forehand, laser serves and swift styling around the court. After sweeping through the first two sets of his opening-round match, Nadal lost his composure and was extended to five sets.

This match is destined for prime-time television, and Roddick could very well drop one, if not two sets, in this tricky encounter. If Nadal is on his game, don’t be surprised to see a real nail-biter.
