After a fun-filled Day 1, I had to go back to work at my other job while Lucy, Kate and their mom, Judith attended the morning session of Day 2 at the Open. They enjoyed a terrific match between Tim Henman and Ivo Karlovic (although terrific is not a word they would use). The 5-set thriller lasted 3 and 1/2 hours and featured several nervous moments for the Brit player. Leg cramps aside, my Brit buddies are also sporting some solid sunburn, thanks to Tiger Timmy.
After work, I rushed to get to the tennis grounds for the evening session and met up with the gang. As we were all famished, we ate some food and caught up on the day’s activities. We also realized that the AR.com’s poetry contest winner was going to be at the Open that night! We called Scot Hirschfield and he set up a meeting for us. We met the delightful Krista Alice from New Jersey who was at the Open with her parents for the very first time. She was sporting a lovely t-shirt and carried a great ‘Andy Rocks’ poster along. We also met Andy’s parents who were nice enough to chat with us for a few minutes. After a rigorous photo session we all went our way.
Lucy and I headed to court 4 to catch one of the upcoming stars in the ladies field, Shikha Uberoi. We stayed for the 1st set, which Shikha won 6-3 and then moved to Ashe stadium to watch Andy. To our disdain, Maria Sharapova who initially held a comfortable lead in the match had lost the 2nd set and the match had been pushed into the 3rd set. After exchanging a couple of breaks, Sharapova served out the match and finally won 7-5 in the 3rd.
Soon Andy came onto the court and was greeted with a thunderous applause. He looked pumped and ready to play. This match was over before we could say, “Let’s go Andy!” For more details on the match please refer to Kate Flory’s match report.
After the match we boarded the train and left for home. It had been another great day at the Open and we only look forward to more fun!
