The long wait finally over, Andy Roddick released all his frustrations on returning to Centre Court, by hammering down an ace on the resumption of his match with Yeu-Tzuoo Wang. No doubt he is at the forefront of the queue of players wishing the Club to rush through the retractable roof which is scheduled to be in place in 2009!
The pair were called off court on Tuesday with Roddick very much in the ascendancy and two points away from a comfortable 5-2 first set lead when the referee suspended play overnight. Little did they know that after just 21-minutes of play, they wouldn”t actually resume until today, and when Roddick returned today, he made sure he swiftly completed.
Within minutes of the resumption, the second seed pocketed the set and while Wang - a qualifier who reached the last four at Surbiton - hung on in the second, it became obvious he would eventually wilt under the Roddick barrage.
The first signs came towards the end of the second set when Roddick upped his game to snatch the Wang serve in the eleventh game. But in his keenness to finish off his good work, he netted what looked an easy forehand on his first set point. It proved a momentary lapse.
Wang, the first player from Chinese Taipei to compete in the main draw at a Grand Slam in the Open era lost his serve for a second time when he opened the third set. With that advantage, Roddick looked set to run out an easy winner as he continued to press Wang. Although there were some excellent exchanges between the two players, Roddick’s out-served and volleyed his opponent before eventually running out the winner, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.
