Are you an Intermediate player with hopes of bringing your tennis game to the next level?
Perhaps you should check out your grip… If you use the multi-purpose continental grip, then evaluate your form.
Here’s a tip that can help you improve your grip, strokes, and inevitably, your game.
Hold your racquet with the racquet face perpendicular to the ground. Most people who use the continental grip, keep their hand on top of the racquet handle (as opposed to behind it).
With this position, the fingers have a significant role in supporting the racquet during impact, and is especially beneficial to those players whose forearms are not as strong as they should be.
Here’s a tip to improve and master the continental grip and it’s easy as extending your index finger.
That’s right, all you need to do is extend your index finger. One mistake many players tend to make is grouping your fingers closely together, so that they’re touching. Some of you may have heard your coaches refer to this as a “hammer grip” (like holding a hammer). Unfortunately, with your fingers touching, your grip is NOT as effective as it should be.
So if you want to make the most out of your grip, then space out your index finger and middle finger, leaving a space about the size of finger… almost as if you have a ghost finger in between your index and middle finger. Then imagine that you’re reaching forward with your index finger. Combine these two easy tips, and then practice hitting a few balls so you’re comfortable with this new form. You’ll find you have more power and control with this improved continental grip, and thus, more power and control with your game!
