Roddick in Shock Defeat at Roland Garros 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2
Andy was sensationally beaten at the French Open today, by Mutis ranked 125 in the world. Mutis, who had not won a match on the tour this year until his first round match at Roland Garros, sent the French crowd on Suzanne Longlen court wild as he knocked out the #2 seed.
There was no hint of what was to come in the first set, which andy won 6-3. Although there had been an exchange of breaks, Andy seemed under no threat.
Andy broke Mutis in the first game of the second set and held his own serve to lead 2-0. Against the run of play Mutis broke the Roddick serve and this seemed to unsettle Andy. When Mutis broke again in the 6th game the pendulum swung the Frenchman’s way and he went on to take the set 6-3.
Taking confidence from his second set win Mutis took first blood. Andy broke back quickly and games then went with serve until at 6-6 we were into a breaker. Andy took an early lead in the tie-break but again Mutis fought back. Andy broke again to lead 6-5 on Mutis” serve and just needed one of his own to take the breaker 7-5.
The fourth set went with serve and Mutis seemed to be tiring, and it was looking like Andy would come through. Mutis, however, dug deep into his reserves and Andy’s first serve percentage began to fall. Mutis broke to lead 5-3 and served out the set 6-3. Towards the end of the set, Andy’s body language suggested that he may not be fully recovered from the virus which had attacked him earlier in the week.
The fifth set was a disaster for the Roddick camp. Andy’s first serve percentage plummeted and at 5-0 he was in danger of being bagelled for the first time in his professional career. He rallied briefly and as Mutis served for the match and broke to take his first game of the set. He then held serve to make the score slightly more respectable. He looked very, very tired though and Mutis made no mistakes when he served for the match a second time. Andy was very sporting throughout the match and applauded many of Mutis” shots. Poor Brad was reduced to biting his nails!
