At the second deuce, Andy forced Martin to hit a forehand out, and then secured the break with his own forehand winner. The match went with serve until Andy was serving at 4-3. Here, Andy went 0-40 down, but hit three aces and an unreturnable serve to get the advantage. A volley long saw them back at deuce. Andy then hit a forehand winner to get game point, followed by another forehand winner to secure the game 5-3. At 5-4, Andy served for the set and with the help of two big aces went 40-0. Another unreturnable gave him the set 6-4.
The match went with serve until 3-3. Here some outstanding forehands and smashes by Andy gave him a 4-3 lead. During the following game, there was a dispute over a line call which went Martin’s way, but both players held their serve until 5-5 with Martin serving. At 30-30, Andy forced the error from Martin giving himself breakpoint. A forehand winner from Martin saw deuce. A double fault by Martin gave Roddick another break point, and a forehand in the net gave Roddick the break to serve for the match.
Andy played a huge smash to give himself match point at 40-15, and a shot out by Martin, gave Andy his first win at Roland Garros since 2001!
