Andy lost his match to past nemesis, Guillermo Canas, today at the Telecom Masters Italia in Rome in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1.
Andy, the second seed, took the Argentine to a first set tiebreak which was tight, but eventually lost the breaker 9-7. The second set was less competitive as Canas broke Andy’s serve three times to claim the set, 6-1, and his second victory over Andy.
The two had met twice previously, splitting the meetings, with Canas prevailing in their most recent encounter at the TMS Toronto in the final in August of 2002.
Rome has not been kind to the seeds, but the results have been favorable toward the clay court specialists. No. 3 seed Rainer Schuettler, the finalist two weeks ago at the TMS Monte Carlo, also lost his opening match yesterday against American Vincent Spadea.
Andy next heads to Hamburg, Germany for yet another TMS clay court event.
