Andy and Jurgen Melzer headed out to Court 1 around 4 PM Sunday afternoon but eventually fell to Gasquet and Tsonga 6-3, 3-6, 10-8. Regardless of the defeat, it was a great opportunity for Andy to play against both Gasquet and Tsonga. Andy certainly took mental notes throughout the match as he will face the Frenchmen again in only a few weeks at the Davis Cup Quarterfinals in Winston Salem.
After only twenty minutes, the boys had broken the Frechmen and had earned a commanding lead of 5-3. They easily served out the set 6-3. In the second set, Gasquet and Tsonga put up a fight. Gasquet and Tsonga broke in the second and served out the set, 6-3, to even that match. With the updated doubles format the match progressed at a very brisk pace, entering the decisive super tie breaker after only fifty minutes of play. In the super tie breaker the Frenchman fought for a mini break and held for 10-8.
Andy received a good workout in the balmy Miami weather in preparation for tomorrow’s singles match against Ivo Minar.
