Top-seeded Andy Roddick defeated fellow American Mardy Fish to advance to the quarterfinals at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships.
Roddick won 6-4, 6-2, and closed out the match stronger than his first-round matchup with Gilles Muller. Roddick needed a tiebreak in the second set to put Muller away.
Roddick is fresh off his title in San Jose. He captured this event in 2002 and was last year’s Memphis runner-up to Tommy Haas. Roddick was also the runner-up here in 2003.
He will face eighth-seeded Swede Robin Soderling, who continued his recent good form with a 6-2, 6-1 thrashing of Romanian Victor Hanescu on Day 4 at the Racquet Club of Memphis. The indoor-specialist Soderling is fresh off his runner-up finish in Rotterdam last week.
Fifth-seeded American Sam Querrey fell out of the tournament in upset fashion, as Swede Jonas Bjorkman pulled off the tough win, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4).
Another upset came when big-serving Aussie Chris Guccione drove out sixth- seeded Swede Thomas Johansson 6-3, 6-4. Guccione will meet fourth-seeded Czech Radek Stepanek here on Friday. Stepanek was last week’s San Jose runner-up to Roddick.
American teenager Donald Young moved into the quarters by sneaking past Colombian Alejandro Falla 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. He will meet Bjorkman in the next round.
The 2008 Memphis titlist will pocket $163,750.
