Andy Roddick, going for his third San Jose title, beat Australian lucky loser Chris Guccione, 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-5) on Wednesday to advance to the second round at the $436,000 SAP Open. Roddick, who captured this event back-to-back in 2004 and 2005, has also made the semifinals three times here, losing to Andre Agassi in 2002 and Andy Murray in 2006 and 2007.
Guccione, ranked 87th in the world, fired 20 aces, but couldn’t pull off the upset of the No. 6 player in the world. The Melbourne native is 2-5 against top 10 players.
Also Wednesday, third seed Tommy Haas of Germany upended American Robert Kendrick, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Haas picked up his first ATP level victory of the season, having lost first round in his first event of the year last week in Delray Beach. The Florida resident is a former semifinalist in San Jose, losing to Roddick in 2005, and has reached the quarterfinals twice.
In another first-round match, Japanese teenager Kei Nishikori, coming off a surprise title last week in Delray Beach, beat Argentine Diego Hartfield, 7-5, 6-3 at HP Pavilion. Up next for Nishikori is Roddick, Thursday night.
