AustralianOpen.com: Roddick breezes past Berrer

Men’s No. 6 seed Andy Roddick has coasted through to the third round of Australian Open 2008 with a routine win over Germany’s Michael Berrer.

Roddick looked in ominous form throughout the second feature night match on Rod Laver Arena, with his serve firing and groundstrokes well-grooved.

He was also extremely effective with his return game, breaking the German a total of six times.

In the opening set Roddick quickly gained the ascendancy, breaking early and then again in the seventh game to claim it 6-2.

It was more of the same in the second, with the American scoring breaks in the fifth and seventh games to take the set by the same margin as the first.

Signs were finally encouraging for the world No.54 Berrer when he raced to a 3-0 lead in the third set.

But that was the only time Roddick ever looked in trouble.

He promptly levelled proceedings and despite some minor resistance from Berrer in the dying stages, went on to triumph 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.

Roddick will now meet No.29 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber in the next round.
