Day 18 - Third Annual ARF Charity Gala

At the Third Annual ARF Charity Gala in Austin, Texas in October, over $1.3m was raised for the Andy Roddick Foundation through a live auction and the help of Sir Elton John, who performed at the event.

Guests had the chance to bid on unique items and experiences, including a casino night at Andy’s Austin home, four tickets and VIP Passes to the Dave Matthews Band 2008 Tour and dinner for 12 at one of Sir Elton John’s homes.

One inspiring tale from the evening features inspirational 9 year-old Tanner Putnam, who asked his friends and family to donate money to the Andy Roddick Foundation instead of giving him birthday presents. Tanner, who is a big fan of tennis and especially Andy, ended up donating over $1000 to the ARF and on receiving a letter from Tanner’s mother, Andy invited Tanner and his family to the event where Tanner presented Andy with the check and, in return, received a signed Babolat racquet and a Davis Cup t-shirt.

Speaking about his donation, Tanner said: “I decided to give my birthday donations because I just felt like being a giver, and Roddick was the first person I thought of helping. Also, I wanted to give to him because he’s a pro tennis player, and I play tennis a lot. Donating something on my birthday just made me feel good at the time. It still makes me feel good. I like Andy because he’s an American tennis player, and he plays so good. I also like Andy because he helps kids and gives to others he doesn’t always know. It was just so exciting to meet him, and everyone in my school (even teachers) loves to hear how cool it was when I met Andy Roddick!”

On the evening of the event, Sir Elton John recognized Tanner’s very special pledge by asking guests to match Tanner’s donation of $1200 prompting dozens to stand up and pledge the money.

So, on Day 18 of Advent, we’d all like to say a huge thank you to Tanner for his donation!
