Andy recently became the fifth player to qualify for the ATP season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai. The Masters Cup sees the 8 top players in the ATP race battle it out in the final event of the year in November.
This year, in a celebration of Chinese culture, the ATP commissioned a sculptor to create Terracotta warriors of all the Shanghai hopefuls. Andy’s sculpture is now complete. His warrior, in it’s full height, will be unveiled in Shanghai, but AR.com has got some head shots of the Terracotta Warrior Andy.
French sculptor, Laury Dizengremet, took measurements of all the players over the summer at the Masters event in Canada. The finished sculptures of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, who have also qualified for Shanghai were unveiled at AMS Madrid two weeks ago.
The Masters Cup website explains the history of the Terracotta warriors:
“The Terracotta Warriors are symbolic of China’s history and internationally recognised around the world. The Terracotta Army were originally created to be buried with the Emperor of Qin in 210-209 BC and it is believed to have taken some 700,000 workers and craftsmen 38 years to complete. The Army was only rediscovered in 1974 and 8,099 figures have since been unearthed around the Emperor’s tomb. The site in China has become a major tourist attraction with nearly two million people visiting annually.”
We think Andy’s sculpture bears a most striking resemblance to him. Let us know your thoughts in the forums!
