Twins, Bob and Mike, have given the USA the advantage going into Sunday’s tennis, with their straight sets victory over Bjorkman-Johansson 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. The twins, cheered on by Andy Roddick, played great tennis and improve their Davis Cup record to 3-0.
On Sunday Andy Roddick will face Jonas Bjorkman in a live rubber. If Andy were to win the match, it would send the USA into the semi-finals. Andy and Jonas have played five times before, with Andy leading the encounters 3-2, including victory at their last match in Miami a week ago. All their meetings have been close, as their games match up well together. Both men have outstanding Davis Cup records.
If the tie were to go to a fifth and deciding rubber, Mardy Fish would take on Thomas Enqvist. The two have played twice before with Mardy winning both matches.
On Friday, In a day filled by rain and under the lights at Delray Beach, Andy Roddick levelled out the US tie at one rubber a piece with his straight sets victory over Thomas Enqvist 6-4, 7-5, 6-2. Despite the difficulties of dealing rain delays all day, both players gave the Delray crowd a good show, but at the end, Enqvist commented that Andy was just “too good.”
Sweden’s Jonas Bjorkman has given the Swedes a 1-0 rubber lead in the quarter-final Davis Cup tie, with his four set victory over Mardy Fish 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5. Fish played an excellent first set, but was disrupted by three rain delays and dropped the next two sets to the on-form Swede. The fourth set showed both men playing outstanding shots in their bid for victory. Both showing great heart and determination. However it was Bjorkman who emerged the victor after serving for the match once and having set point on Fish’s serve, he finally clinched victory when serving for the match a second time at 6-5.
