Andy will open his US Open campaign against compatriot and friend Justin Gimelstob. This is the second time this year Andy will face Justin on his farewell year.

The New Jersey native has raised the checkered flag after 12 years on the tour. This week’s US Open will be Justin’s final trip to flushing meadows as a competitor. He is likely to return, however, as a commentator as Gimelsob has already contributed to several telecasts.

In an interesting twist, it was Andy who gave Justin his final bow at Wimbledon this year. The two met in the first round, Andy advanced 6-1, 7-5, 7-6(3). Andy and Justin enjoy the friendly competition. The two had a bet at the All England Club who could dive more during their match. “He said he would be the first person in history to dive during the warm-up,” Andy admired Justin’s competitive spirit. “Justin used to play doubles with my brother in juniors. I’ve known him since I was nine running around tournaments. He was actually playing in ‘em. I’ve known Justin a long time.”

We don’t imagine the two will be wagering on diving this time around, but it is promised to be an animated and emotional match. They have faced off only two times before, Andy clinching both matches, the first of which dates back to 2002.
