Under the blistering Cincy sun, Andy was upset by 16th seed David Ferrer 6-7(4), 4-6.
Andy opened the set on his serve, and the two battled ferociously throughout the first set, neither player earning a break opportunity until the 10th game. Ferrer’s first double fault gave Andy set point but the Spaniard fought off that and two additional set points to level the match at 5-all. Andy settled any frustrations by the missed chances, and pushed onward for 6-5. Ferrer countered with a hold and the two headed into a tiebreak to the delight of the fans on center court. Andy’s first doubled fault of the match gave Ferrer a mini break and the Spaniard took advantage of the rare double fault, stretching his lead to 3-0. Andy held steady to lessen the gap to 2-3. Ferrer was relentless on his serve, giving Andy little to work with. With another ace, the Spaniard took the first set 7-6 (4).
Andy immediately put pressure on Ferrer in the second set going up 30-0 on the Spaniard’s serve. But once again, Ferrer dug out of a hole to hold. Andy continued to fight, looking to create opportunities on Ferrer’s serve but the Spaniard was uncompromising. They battled to 4-5, where Andy gave up one break point and Ferrer ended his Cincy Campaign 7-6(4), 6-4).
It is certainly a tough loss, but look for Andy and Team Roddick to work even harder heading into the US Open.
