Should the United States and Russia qualify for it, the 2007 Davis Cup final could be played at the Sports Arena on Nov. 30-Dec. 2.William J. Kellogg, president of the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, said he is petitioning the USTA to make San Diego the site should the United States win a semifinal tie against Sweden in Goteborg, Sweden, on Sept. 21-23 and at the same time Russia outplays Germany in Moscow.
“On paper, both the countries are reasonable favorites to move ahead,” Kellogg said of the United States and Russia, which is the current holder of the Davis Cup, having defeated Argentina 3-2 in the 2006 final in Moscow. The United States last won the event in 1995.
Kellogg is highly placed in the USTA, chairing its Davis Cup and Fed Cup committees, and he said the USTA sent him the proposal he was required to complete in requesting San Diego be selected as the possible tie’s site. He identified San Jose as the only other city of which he is aware that is bidding for the match.
Kellogg said he was moved to act by how a first-round match between the United States and Romania in the 2006 eliminations was received at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. Further, Kellogg said he recognized that because of his USTA chairmanships, he should do whatever he can to promote the Davis Cup.
