All week long, commentators and tennis fans alike have noted that the Rogers Cup draw has the makings of Grand Slam matches. Today’s Quarterfinal against Novak Djokovic was certainly one of those. Unfortunately it wasn’t in the cards for Andy as the Serbian ended his Rogers Cup campaign, 7-6 (4), 6-4.
Andy opened the much anticipated Quarterfinal match on his serve with a decisive hold to get on the board, 1-0. Djokovic dug off love thirty to hold his first service game. Andy saw his first break opportunity at 3-2 but Djokovic fought off him off for deuce. After 400 wins, Andy displayed he was no stranger to line calls when he correctly challenged a call that would have given Djokovic the game. Andy was successful in the challenge but Djokovic was able to level the set at 3 a piece. Not the least bit distracted by the previous game, Andy surged onward with an easy hold for 4-3. Djokovic stumbled on his serve at 4-5, dumping two consecutive double faults but was relentless and once again able to dig back to even the set 5-5. Likewise, Andy faced some heavy pressure on his serve for the first time in the match. He fought off the first break point but Djokovic capitalized on the second, breaking the almost unbreakable Roddick for a 6-5 lead. Andy stubbornly fought for break points on Djokovic’ss serve and was able to convert the second to send the set to a tiebreak. Early in the breaker Andy was able to take advantage of Djokovic’s second serve earning a mini break 2-1, but the rollercoaster match continued and Djokovic fought back for 5-2. Andy closed the gap slightly but Djokovic was able to serve out the tie break 7-6 (4).
Djokovic opened the second set 1-0. Once again the two traded holds for 3-3 At 3-4 Andy found himself down 15-40. He brilliantly set up his shots to earn deuce, but again faced a break point. Andy remained steady, saving the biggest game of the match thus far for 4-4. Djokovic fired two aces in his service game to push the set onward 5-4. At 30-40 Andy faced a match point and was unable to set the point up to his advantage on his second serve. Djokovic threw off his shirt in victory 7-6 (4), 6-4 after an hour and forty five minutes.
In an unusual turn of events, Djokovic served 13 aces to Andy’s 5 but the Serbian also gave up 5 double faults while Andy only dumped one. At the end of the day, Andy feel short by six points but had a strong week in Montreal.
