This week has always been the week of Andy in Indy. The RCA Championship in Indianapolis, Indiana, comes with two cute and furry friends that have first ‘dibs on meeting the winner with the trophy for a big wet kiss, a doggy kiss that is. Nipper and Chipper are the two white Jack Russell mascots who attend the finals every year.
This year La La Land is kicking off the US Open Series, but it is usually Indy that’s the first stop. At Andy’s first year playing in Indy back in 2003, he ran right for the title and that famous winning kiss and got it after defeating Kiefer in straight sets. In 2004, he made it a Double Delight, but Srichapan put up more of a fight by pushing Andy to a tie-break in the first set. Andy quickly took the lead and won the breaker 7-2 and shortly after earned the break in the second set to win his second RCA title.
In 2005, a three-peat was not in Andy’s favor as he clashed with fellow American Robby Ginepri in the quarterfinals and was sent packing. After another year had turned the calendar, Andy and Robby met again but this time in the semifinals. Andy was not about to make it a Double Defeat in Indy and took Robby down in straight sets. It was an all-American final against James Blake, and those two fought tooth and nail for that title, but the Bronx Boy took the trophy. Andy did however also make it to the doubles finals where he and Robby Ginepri came out champions (with Double Doggy Delight in the winners circle).
After a week at home resting up and pumping up his game for the hard-court USOS, Andy is packed and ready to go back to Indy for his fifth consecutive year. Stay tuned to AR.com for everything Andy in Indy and of course next week in Andy history. Go Andy!
