Andy Roddick and Serena Williams led a super-powered United States surge at Wimbledon overnight before torrential rain swept away Roger Federer’s hopes of completing his second round outing.
Roddick and Williams helped ease the misery of the French Open where America’s men were all beaten in the first round, their worst performance on the Roland Garros clay.
So the grass - if not the rain - of the All England Club was even more of a welcome sight this year and Roddick, twice a Wimbledon runner-up, eased into the third round with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win over Thailand’s Asian Games champion Danai Udomchoke.
Roddick secured his win before heavy rain brought an end to the day’s action leaving Federer stranded, but healthily placed, in his second round match leading Argentinian teenager Juan Martin del Potro 6-2, 7-5, 2-0.
