Andy Roddick blasted his way into the Paris Masters’ quarter finals today with a superb display of serving. Watched by a relaxed Brad Gilbert and Management Agent Ken Meyerson, Andy defeated Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-4.
For perhaps the first time in his professional career Andy emerged to play his match minus any headgear, is this a new look or are Andy headgear watchers going to be treated to another hat for the Masters’ Cup!
Andy served first and easily held to lead 1-0. In the third game Tommy Robredo hit a wild drive volley and then double faulted to give Andy the break to lead 3-1. In the next game a stunning return from Robredo was cancelled out by a 224km ace from Andy as he held serve. Andy, launching himself like a torpedo into his serves was in control now. With the help of a backhand cross court pass he took the first set 6-3.
The second set was with serve until the third game. Andy had three break points but Tommy Robredo fought back bravely and took the game to 3 deuces until Andy finally broke to lead 2-1. Andy held his next service game, despite doing a slamdunk into the net. Andy was in frightening form and shots were raining around Robredo who to his credit refused to give in. Despite this however Andy served for the match at 5-3 and in just over the hour secured his place in the quarter finals.
As a result of his win today Andy will be world #1 when the updates are released on Monday. Well done Andy we are proud of you!
