Andy Snatches Victory To Reach Semis

Andy Roddick vs. Vince Spadea
Friday, Stadium court, not before 7.00pm (local time)

Andy is through to the semi-finals of the TMS Miami with a spectacular win over Spaniard, Carlos Moya 5-7, 6-2, 7-5. Andy will play Vince Spadea in the semi-finals. They have played three times before with Andy leading the encounters 2-1, with Spadea winning their last match in Scottsdale a few weeks ago.

In the quarter-final, both players exchanged breaks in the first set, however it was Moya through at 6-5, to take the first set. Andy was able to break twice, partially due to unforced errors by Moya. These breaks were enforced by consistent serving from Andy.

In the third set, Andy found himself, due to some bad volleys, 5-3 down. Andy then held to love hitting three aces which got the crowd behind him and spurred him on to break. At 5-4, Andy was gifted the break back, as Moya hit too many unforced errors. Andy was extremely fired up. Andy was still under pressure though, in the next game and went 30-40 down, but a stupendous cross-court forehand pass on the run saved break point and the American went on to hold his serve. The momentum had swung dramatically and Andy capitalised on this, by hitting a great backhand pass to get match point, followed up by a winning shamsh to seal victory.

In an on-court interview with SKY Sports, Andy said:

“There’s definitely room for improvement. To stay alive, I’m going to have to reach that plateau.”

“I lost to Calleri in Hamburg and I lost to Vince a couple of weeks ago in Scottsdale, I got to step it up!”
