Winston-Salem Journal: Wacky Rackets

In Winston-Salem, giant tennis rackets are serving as greeting cards.

Local artists and schoolchildren have taken 8-foot-tall plywood tennis rackets and turned them into works of art that have been set up downtown and at other spots through the city.

“They are to welcome guests - to make it festive,” said Sharon Nelson, the executive director of Associated Artists of Winston-Salem, which is sponsoring the project.

The guests in question are people coming to town for the Davis Cup quarterfinal match between the United States and Spain, scheduled for next Friday through April 8. Players are scheduled to arrive today.
