Tennis Week: Poker Eyes

“Looks like Andy Roddick is holding a wining hand – he’s hip, popular, and now his tennis game is on fire too,” reads the opening line of Tennis Week’s feature on Andy in the April issue.

Interviewed at his home in Austin Texas and including photos by Ar.com’s own Ron Angle, Tennis Week grilled Andy on everything from his poker game, Davis Cup, the Foundation and his celebrity image.

“It works, we are both insanely competitive,” Andy speaks to his successful mentorship with Jimmy Connors. Sharing Connor’s passion on court, Andy explains how is starting to use his poker game face to mask his on court emotions. “I’ve got more of a poker face out there now. There’s been less emotion in my matches these last couple of years.”

After some laughs about not being the number one poker player on tour, he gives that title to compatriot James Blake, Andy shares the pride of his career, the impact of his foundation. “I’m really proud of it. We raised about $1.5 million last year with my poker events alone, and over $6 million in the last five of six years. My mother had the vision, so it’s a bonding point with her. Doing this with her has been very rewarding.”

Under new editorial management, Tennis Week recently got a makeover, and the debut issue of the new Tennis Week is available now. For more information on how to subscribe visit www.tennisweek.com
