Andy Roddick retired in the middle of the first set at 5-3 against Andy Murray today at the Sony Ericsson Open after 45 minutes of play and a trip inside to get treated by the trainer. The Battle of the Andys began as expected, going ball for ball where planning each point was crucial. At 2-2 with Roddick serving, he began showing some discomfort in his left side. The two players shared a few more good points, but Roddick’s pain became more apparent with every ball hit to his backhand side.

In the change-over, Andy called for the trainer, pointed to his upper outer left thigh and they went inside to see if it could be worked out. With Roddick serving after returning, it showed right away that the pain was not going away and he’d have to make a decision soon. On break point, Roddick came to the net, hit the ball and just stood up as Murray hit a cross court to no defense.

They both met at the net, exchanged words, and Murray showed respect for a player who always brings out the best in his game. Stay tuned to AR.com for everything going on with Andy in Miami, and cross your fingers for a speedy recovery for Davis Cup. Feel better, Andy!
