Indian Wells: Andy Into Next Round

Andy Roddick rolled into the third round in two sets over Spain’s Feliciano Lopez, 7-6(5), 6-4. Eighty minutes and 15 aces later, Andy moves onto the third round at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, California.

Showing that his practice session with Marat Safin paid off being victorious in a single set tie-break both last night and tonight, when it officially counted, Andy prevailed by breaking ahead to reach seven in the breaker first. After both Andy and Lopez were on fire and holding without any break chances the first set, a tie-break was the only option. The tie-break mimiced the first set as they both held and played hard, but Andy found the open-court and edged ahead and then sealed the lead 7-6(5) to take the first set.

The second set was going strong but as the hour mark turned, so did the score. Andy broke Lopez early on the set, and both players held serve until the end. Even though Lopez double-faulted at 3-5 where Andy couldn’ve broken him to take home the match, Lopez held it together for a few mintunes longer to not give up the match on his racquet. With the yellow canon coming off Andy’s rocket racquet, he served an ace and played stellar tennis to earn a triple match point. He only needed one chance though to earn the “W” into the third round, and did so at 6-4 in the second set.
