Murray Prevails in San Jose

Andy’s San Jose campaign was ended by Andy Murray in the Saturday night semi when the Brit clocked up a tight victory: 7-6(8), 6-4.

Straight sets is not a fair reflection on Andy’s effort and performance though, and the first set in particular was extremely competitive with both men having chances to win it. After an entertaining start to the match by both guys, with break points spotted around but not converted, it was Murray who drew first blood in the set at 4-3 when a backhand pass broke down Andy’s resistance and he took a 5-3 lead. But the Scot then produced an error ridden game and Andy took advantage nicely to level up again and carry the set into a deciding tie break.

The tie break was a thriller for the fans to watch. Both men produced some of their best tennis of the set and despite both holding multiple set points throughout it, it wasn’t until Murray’s third attempt at 9-8 that he managed to clinch the set with another scintillating pass which clipped the net on its way over, just taking it away from Andy’s reach.

Into the second set and the high quality of tennis resumed with winners galore to entertain the fans. However, once again it was Murray who made the first move, exposing Andy’s discomfort at the net to break serve again with another fine passing shot to lead 3-2.

Andy fought valiantly to rescue the situation and held break back point at 4-3, but neat play and a volley winner from Murray snuffed out the chance and some more big serving took him to a 5-3 lead.

Serving for the set and the match never looked in doubt for the Scot who produced some clinical play and another forehand pass, albeit helped on its way by the top of the net, secured the victory for him and a place in the final.

Well done to Andy on a solid week in San Jose, he’ll be back on the courts next week in Memphis. Stay tuned to AndyRoddick.com for all the latest!
