Andy Roddick successfully continued his quest for a third crown at the SAP Open on Thursday. The top-seeded American defeated Sam Querrey, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to advance to the quarterfinals in a hardcourt event which saw seven of the top eight seeds take the court.
“It’s easy to be around him, he’s a fun kid,” Roddick said. “During the matches he’s a little tougher to hit. I was bearing down on him.”
“It was a little overwhelming at first, but I had a good time,” Querrey said. “It was just a couple of points here and there. You really can’t read it (Roddick’s serve). You think it goes one way, and it goes the other.”
Roddick, who won here in 2004 and 2005 before losing last year in the semifinals to Britain’s Andy Murray, posted a straight-sets win over Canadian Frank Dancevic in the first round on Wednesday.
Roddick next will meet eighth-seeded American Vincent Spadea, who rallied to beat Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).
“If I play well, I like my chances,” Roddick said of playing Spadea.
In the biggest upset of the tournament, second-seeded American James Blake dropped a 2 hour, 6 minute marathon to Ivo Karlovic, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (13-11), 6-4. The Croat, who held a 29-3 edge in service aces, rallied to even his all-time mark against Blake to 1-1.
