Our number one American is set to take on the number two Czech, Ivo Minar, for the first match in this Davis Cup tie in the CEZ Arena in Ostrava. After the Draw Ceremony and formal dinner, the men have been hitting the clay hard and sliding well to prepare for their first round challenge.
“We have no reason to underestimate anything,” commented on their first round draw. “The Czechs have two players in the top 20.” That was true until number 19 Radek Stepanek, whom Andy would’ve faced in his first match, declined to represent his country, leaving 12th seed Tomas Berdych to lead the pack.
As physical preparations are culminating today, Andy is mentally preparing to face Minar tomorrow for the first time. Andy has the advantage of 2’s on his side: he’s two years older than Minar, two inches taller to bring down that kick serve a bit harder, and turned pro two years earlier. Also, Andy holds 22 titles where Minar is still striving to earn his first.
Minar is ranked 160 in the world and recently lost in Sydney to teammate Tomas Berdych after defeating Paradorn Scrichapan. Born and raised in Prague, Minar is most familiar with the clay and could come up with some tricky shots.
Here are more stats on Minar:

Height: 6’0’’ (182 cm)
Weight: 187 lbs (85 kg)
