From Russian conspiracy theories to man purses… From life on tour, to poker in Vegas… From fine of the week to throwing yourself at a wall, Andy has kept us all entertained this year with his regular blog entries, exclusively on AndyRoddick.com. As part of our ‘best of’ series on Andy’s official site, we have picked out some of the witty highlights of Andy’s blogs.
Some of Andy’s comments, while giving him reason to perhaps cross the road if he sees Mike Tyson, also caused a stir in the media. Focussing on accessories, Andy cheekily suggested some English men should be awarded ‘Self Chuck of the Week’ for their “man purses”.
“I have seen some guys walking around with man purses here in London…. anything bigger than a money clip or a wallet is to be left to your girlfriend / wife…and just so we are clear you should not be able to throw your “wallet” over a shoulder…if you have a man purse, the wall is waiting.”
Another hot topic over the summer was women’s handbags. Whilst his initial comment was made in People magazine, Andy’s shovel continued digging when he followed up in his US Open re-cap blog,
“I’ve been getting a lot of flack (mostly from girls I know) about my guest review in People Magazine. Apparently you ladies think you need to carry gigantic bags, but I stand by what I said earlier – a little ridiculous. I mean honestly, some of those bags would not pass the carry on test at an airport. If you are carrying a suitcase around and you can’t acknowledge it’s a tad big – wall!”
Our first re-cap was Andy’s TV appearance on ‘Ellen’. In his October blog, Andy shared memories from his holiday in Las Vegas following that show:
“I told my Mom I needed to practice for the charity poker event we’re hosting in December. Funny how they say “everything that happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,” and then my friends tell me they read about things that didn’t even happen.”
We believe you Andy…thousands wouldn’t!
One of the most popular features of Andy’s blog this year was ‘Fine of the Week’. We’ve seen suggestions of Russian conspiracies at baggage check to indoor rain delays, but after looking back over the ‘chosen ones’ who faced world wide web embarrassment, we can reveal that the person with most ‘Fines of the Week’, was none other than Andy’s sister-in-law, Ginger Roddick!
However, not one to shirk in the shadows, Andy was not afraid to nominate himself for Fine of the Week. His pre-US Open entry saw Andy receive his own prestigious award:
“So I am not proud, and I knew this day was only a matter of time…I definitely locked myself out on my balcony when I got to my room in New York last Sunday. My brother John was at a diner next door and i had to call him to help me out….. ”
Lastly, the most important reason for Andy’s blogs were to communicate with his fans. Andy expressed this most in his final blog entry of 2006:
“I also want to thank all of you fans for sticking by me. It was tough to keep up a strong exterior with a lot of negativity and questions swirling what felt like all the time. It was nice to know that some people still had faith and were more interested in helping me build it back up as opposed to tearing it down for the sake of a story.”
