Hits and Giggles in Wichita!

One week ago, riding onto the court on a motorcyle, Andy arrivied in Wichita, Kansas in style. While AndyRoddick.com couldn’t be on-site at this charity exhibition, we caught up with two fans who were in the stands on ‘Andy Roddick Day’. Brett Coupe and 10sluvr22 from the forums both shared their experiences with us.

“The Wichita Exhibition was a really fun event for the players and the people in the crowd.” Brett shared. “The atmosphere was very lax the players especially Andy liked to make jokes and talk to the crowd. Andy beat Querrey 6-2 6-4. The Jensens kept calling Sam ‘rookie’ which was pretty funny. Andy showed the crowd his impression of current and past player’s serves which was hilarious. My favorite was his impression of Nadal. In the doubles match Roddick and Querrey beat the Jensen brothers and they played a game called butts up. Andy and Sam served and tried to hit them in the butt. Since they won both sets they both got to serve twice. Murphy got hit 3 times and Luke didn’t get hit at all.”

10sluvr22 added, “The make shift stadium was tiny, holding only around 3,000, so every seat in the house truly was great! As soon as Andy stepped on, or rode on court rather, he was cracking jokes and it was just a blast! All of the players were great sports and made the entire night enjoyable. Andy’s commentary through the mixed doubles match was hilarious as was the Jensen brothers on court antics. Getting to see Andy’s serve up close was probably one of the coolest things about the night, TV just doesn’t do it justice! It was great to see the up and comer Sam Querrey! Some of the highlights of the night were Andy’s serving impressions, butts up, and as I listed before, seeing Andy’s serve! And of course, Andy was biting his nails the entire time!”

Previously, Andy has been on a ‘My Ride’ bus tour to parts of the USA which do not get the chance to see much live tennis. Last Saturday’s exhibition in Wichita definitely put tennis on the map in Kansas!

10sluvr22 summed up for us, the importance of Andy going to Wichita,

“The event was really important to Wichita, because we really don’t get big events like this at all. Another awesome moment of the night came at the very end. The man sitting next to me had never watched a tennis match in his life and his wife spent the entire first part of the event teaching him the rules, scorings, and other basics. By the end of it, he was probably more into it to then I was! While leaving I heard him comment to his wife about how amazing this was and how much he was missing out on, not being a tennis fan! After I heard this I knew the event had reached one of its goals, converting some new tennis fans, and it was all possible because of Andy!”
