Andy’s Madrid Masters Series tournament came to a premature end as he lost to Tomas Berdych 7-6(9-7), 6-3. The first set was a very tight encounter but an ankle injury in the second set was largely responsible for the way the match ended.

It was an exciting match for the Madrid fans with both men looking to get to the Masters Cup in Shanghai and they weren’t disappointed as the pair put in a brilliant display of serving in the first set.

Andy only dropped one point on his serve on the way to setting up a tie break with Berdych and kept that up until 6-6 in the tie break when he unfortunately hit a double fault to give Berdych a set point. Berdych missed that chance with a poor volley but had another opportunity at 8-7 and hit a great backhand pass to snatch the first set from Andy 9-7.

Tensions were high at the start of the second set, both men only too aware of how important it was to hold serve. Andy saved three break points early on and weathered the storm from Berdych well. He seemed to be settling down in the set when disaster struck at 3-2 when he pulled up as he was serving for 3-3. It seems that Andy hurt his left ankle and Bill Norris, the ATP trainer was quick to come on and assess the injury for him.

Being the champion that he is, Andy decided to carry on and play the match out for the fans, and to give Berdych the credit of victory against him. Berdych broke Andy straight away with a tremendous forehand pass on break point and despite Andy managing to get one more game through impressive serving, his ankle really hampered him and Berdych went on to take the set 6-3.

Andy’s decision to play on was greatly appreciated by the fans and they gave him a big ovation as he left the court. Obviously now Andy’s focus will be on making sure he is fully fit for the Masters Cup in Shanghai and we’ll bring you all the latest news as we get it.
