Rain came down very heavily in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Thursday causing most play to be suspended until Friday. Roddick vs. Bogomolov Jr which was scheduled as the night match never took court, and will be played on Friday second on centre court, following a 10.00am start. The winner of this match, will then play the winner of Gambill vs. Burgsmuller as the night session on Friday, beginning at 6.30pm (local time).
Number one seed, Andy Roddick is through to round two of the Arizona Men’s Championships with his rain delayed victory over John Van Lottum of the Netherlands 6-3, 7-5.
The match did not go without a few sparks flying though. Roddick went 2-0 down in the second set, and then received a point penalty for arguing with the umpire and the ATP event supervisor, over an over-rule and hence delaying the match.
The first rain delay came in the second set, but Van Lottum held for 5-2, until Roddick mounted a come-back to lead the Dutchman 6-5 and 30-30 on Van Lottum’s serve when the next rain delay came, causing the match to be delayed until Wednesday. Roddick then wrapped it up convincingly to break Van Lottum for the match.
In the next round, Andy will face US wildcard, Alex Bogomolov Jr. The two have never met before in an ATP or Grand slam event.
