American tennis player Andy Roddick turned up confident of defeating Russia in the Davis Cup semi finals thanks to his new coach, the legendary Jimmy Connors.
“Connors has done a lot for me in recent weeks. There’s no doubt that he’s contributed a lot towards the preparation of the team,” confirmed Roddick in a press conference in the Russian capital.
The North American tennis player, 24, said that he is “in permanent telephone contact with Connors who, unfortunately, hasn’t been able to make it to Moscow.”
Roddick, who will play the singles with James Blake admitted that the clay court that Russia has chosen for the tie “isn’t one that suits them best” and that they do prefer a “faster surface.”
However, he added: “We have the best doubles pair in the world – Bob and Mike Bryan. And if you look at the team, it’s well balanced.” Since Connors became his coach, Roddick has won the Cincinnati tournament and he reached the final of the US Open where he was defeated by Federer in four sets.
The tie between Russia the USA will take place September 22-24 in the Pabellon Olimpiski in Moscow.
