The United States and Russia will battle in a Davis Cup semifinal this weekend, and the best-of-five tie will get underway Friday with a marquee singles rubber between a pair of former world No. 1s, Andy Roddick and Marat Safin. Roddick is 3-2 lifetime against Safin. The two stars haven’t met since 2004 and have never squared off in Davis Cup play.
The world No. 6 2003 U.S. Open champion Roddick lost to Roger Federer in the 2006 U.S. Open finale earlier this month, while Safin is a two-time Grand Slam champion, including a U.S. Open title in 2000.
Roddick-Safin will be followed by a bout between ninth-ranked American James Blake and U.S. Open semifinalist Mikhail Youzhny.
