Roddick, Blake named to Davis Cup Team

The USTA and U.S. Davis Cup Captain Patrick McEnroe today announced that world No. 7 James Blake, world No. 10 Andy Roddick, and the world’s No. 1 doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan will comprise the U.S. squad that will face Russia in the semifinals of the 2006 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas on an indoor red clay court in Moscow’s Olympic Stadium, September 22-24.This is the fourth consecutive tie that the team of Blake, Roddick and the Bryans has been named to represent the United States in Davis Cup - a team that is 3-0 together.  This quartet began its Davis Cup run by defeating Belgium in the World Group Playoff last September on clay in Leuven, Belgium.  This year they defeated Romania, 4-1, in the first round and Chile, 3-2, in the quarterfinals.

“We are looking forward to playing in the semifinals against a tough Russian team,” said U.S. Davis Cup Captain Patrick McEnroe, who is 9-5 in the past five year and led the U.S. to the 2004 Davis Cup Final.  “It will be a challenge, but we hope to repeat the great performance the U.S. had in the 1995 final the last time we played on Moscow on clay.”

Led by Pete Sampras, the United States won its last Davis Cup title in 1995, defeating Russia at the same site and on the same surface to be used this year.  Sampras won all three points in the 3-2 victory and is the last American to win three live matches in the same Davis Cup tie.
