Andy Downs Morrison At RCA Championships

A late start didn’t affect Andy Roddick when it came time to get down to business, and showed he was 100% focused when he capitalized on the only break in the entire match and won in two sets 7-6 (4), 7-5 over compatriot Jeff Morrison.

The match began with Andy having a break point on Morrison’s first service game, but couldn’t Andy converge. Though Morrison won that game, Andy fired a 143mph ace past him on his next serve to show Morrison that he is not going anywhere without a fight. Both players were serving up aces and forcing errors on each other, and it all came down to a tie break after double break and set points slipped through Andy’s racquet strings. Andy immediately focused on the task at hand and pumped up his game to take the win, 7-6 (4).

The second set was a repeat of the first- no serves were broken, though a few went to deuce a few times. Then, they tied again at 5-5, but Andy had the first chance to pull ahead and did to earm a 6-5 lead. Andy not only accepted the challenge of needing to break Morrison for the win, he conquered it by quickly gaining a double break and match point lead. Andy only needed one though as he sealed the deal, broke Morrison, and claimed his pass to the quarterfinals at 7-5.

The next match for Andy of this quarterfinal US Open Series event is a 2005 US Open rematch against Giles Muller. Stay tuned for a match preview and everything Andy in Indy. Go Andy!
