Roddick Through in a Rush

Andy Roddick wasted no time in booking his spot in the third round, galloping through against Florian Mayer to set up a potential blockbuster third round tie with home favourite Andy Murry on Saturday.
It was sixteen minutes to eight in the evening before the American number three seed put ball to racquet in anger today, thanks to the longevity of previous encounters out on Court Two. It hasn’t been Roddick’s week for early scheduling – his first round match, delayed from Monday thanks to the rain, was then cancelled on Tuesday when daylight simply ran out.
At least his tennis seemed improved from that first round. Roddick was plainly determined to get the match wrapped up before the gloaming enveloped Court Two, and remarkably he succeeded. He beat the 22-year-old German at a brisk pace, finishing 6-4, 6-1, 6-2.
Roddick could scarcely have been more visibly impatient, arriving so soon after the previous match was over that the names of those earlier combatants were still on the scoreboard when he and Mayer began knocking up. His appetite for the match was established by an early delivery of 143mph, and he appeared unimpeded by playing with both ankles strapped.
