After a late Round One victory over Tipsarevic, Andy next faces Mayer on his road to the finals. No, not his musician friend John Mayer, Germany’s unseeded Florian Mayer. Mayer and Andy will play each other for the first time in the second round at SW19 on Thursday.
Florian Mayer has yet to clinch a tournament title, but has reached his highest ATP ranking of 33 back in 2004, and currently holds his place at 63. Mayer defeated Robin Vik (CZE) in the first round to earn his place on the baseline across from Andy’s record-breaking serve.
Last year, Mayer reached the third round where he lost to the 2003 US Open runner-up, Juan Carlos Ferrero. The 6’3” German has nothing to lose, and Andy has everything to gain. This Round Two match will be one to watch.
Here are more stats on Mayer (GER):
Birthdate: 5-Oct-83
Birthplace: Bayreuth, Germany
Residence: Bayreuth, Germany
Height: 6’3’’ (190 cm)
Weight: 180 lbs (81 kg)
Plays: Right-handed
Turned Pro: 2001
Coach: Stefan Eriksson
Mayer also tributes Pete Sampras as a child hood idol. Although both men looked up to the Wimbledon legend, only one will be looking up at the crowd from the court in Round Three. Stay tuned for the Order of Play. Go Andy!
