Third seed Andy Roddick survived a spirited display by his first round opponent, Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, the American winning a three hour match 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.
Thanks to the rain on Monday, last year’s beaten finalist had not been able to get his campaign under way until the third day of The Championships. After all that hanging around, he could be forgiven for frayed nerves. But when Tipsarevic appeared to ignore his opponent’s credentials and just started swinging away at the ball, it all got very tense indeed.
It was a tale of two tie-breaks – Tipsarevic won one and Roddick won the other. The 22-year-old Serb had thrown everything he had at the American and spent most of the afternoon running around like a whippet with its tail on fire, but he could not quite pull away from Roddick. Once the chance to take a 2-1 lead had vanished in that third set tiebreak, the Serb could do no more.
