ANDY RODDICK’S season always hits the brakes when he arrives at Roland Garros. Quite literally. The heavy red clay helps to nullify the pace of his fearsome service game and his season stalls. But, the American knows the grass is greener on the other side.
While the European clay season, culminating in the French Open, and Roddick are just not compatible, he is now entering his most profitable and successful spell on the calendar.
In the past three years he made it as far as one semi-final and two finals at Wimbledon, the perfect preamble to all three being victory at the Stella Artois Championships. This year, with his damaged ankle ligaments on the mend, the Queens Club will again provide the foundation for the 23-year-old to build on as he aims for a record-breaking fourth consecutive title at the grass event and a confidence boost going into the next Grand Slam later this month.
