Andy’s Mission: Alberto Martin

After successfully recovering from his worrying ankle injury, Andy is all set to compete in the French Open. Up first for the American is Spaniard, Alberto Martin.

The Spaniards are famed for their ability on clay courts, but Martin has struggled a little of late on the dirt. He comes into the French Open on the back of two first round defeats in Poertschach and Hamburg. Martin has not won a match at the French Open since 2002, and has only won two matches on the clay in Roland Garros during his career.

Here are Martin’s stats from the ATP site:
Birthdate: 20-Aug-78
Birthplace: Barcelona, Spain
Residence: Barcelona, Spain
Height: 5’9’’ (175 cm)
Weight: 162 lbs (73 kg)
Plays: Right-handed
Turned Pro: 1995
Current INDESIT ATP Ranking – Singles: 68
Career High INDESIT ATP Ranking – Singles: 34 (6/11/2001)
Current Stanford ATP Doubles Ranking: 138
Career High Stanford ATP Doubles Ranking: 64 (10/2/2000)

Andy has an outstanding record against his 27 year old opponent. They have played four times and Andy has won all four encounters without the loss of a single set. One of those victories came on clay in St. Poelten three years ago.

The players are fourth out on Susan Lenglen court on Tuesday, with play beginning at 11am CET (5am EST). Stay tuned for all the latest from Paris. Allez Andy!
