Roddick Bags Marcos

Andy Roddick enacted sweet revenge in Rome on Wednesday as he claimed out a victory over Marcos Baghdatis 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Playing in front of a full stadium, with a raucous crowd, it was a Battle of the Galdiators as Andy and Baghdatis both fought hard for a place in the last sixteen.

There were several breaks of serve in the first set. Marcos Baghdatis re-produced the form that had seen him reach the Australian Open final, as he broke the American’s serve twice for a 5-2 lead. Andy whipped up the power and produced an aggressive game to get one break back, but was unable to push the momentum home, and Baghdatis recovered quickly executing a forehand volley to take the first set 6-3.

Andy dug his heels in to produce a dominating second set. The American’s determination in running down every drop shot paid off as he finally forced some errors from the Cypriot to take an early 2-1 lead. Re-finding his powerful first serve, Andy was able to stay ahead in the set, and a double fault by Baghdatis handed Andy a commanding 4-1 lead. The young hero from Cyprus was further haunted by the double faults, as he produced another one to level the match at one set all.

The third set was a gritty affair as Baghdatis started strongly taking an early break from the American. Fighting hard, Andy produced a stunning effort and a lucky off-the-frame lob to break back and level proceedings at 2-2. After being plagued for much of the match by the cunning drop shots from Baghdatis, Andy finally produced one of his own, much to his delight, and the delight of Coach, John Roddick and Trainer, Doug Spreen who sat court side. Baghdatis began to struggle with consistency, and Roddick capitalized on this as he broke for a 4-2 lead.

Both players were un-relentless in their attitude and effort to win the match. So it was no surprise that Baghdatis forced a break point opportunity at 4-2. Andy’s gutsy spirit shone through as he executed a perfect drop shot to save the point. A smile from Andy followed by a smash and fish pump showed his desire to play dirt ball. Baghdatis, under enormous pressure at 5-2, ended the match on an unfortunate double fault. Andy will take it though, as he now faces a third round clash with Britain’s Greg Rusedski!
