U.S. Tennis to Challenge Chile in ‘Star City’

Welcome to Rancho Mirage, California. Population: 15,000. Annual average income: US$ 89,000. Days of sunlight per Year: 350. These are just some of the impressive facts about the venue chosen by the U.S Tennis Association (www.usta.com) to stage the forthcoming quarterfinal match against Chile on April 7 and 9.

Rancho Mirage is a town in the middle of the desert 176 kilometers to the east of Los Angeles and 18 kilometers southeast of Palm Springs. Its main streets are Frank Sinatra Drive and Bob Hope Drive. Other famous residents have been Dinah Shore and Ginger Rogers (that passed away there in 1995). About 43 percent of its citizens are over 65 years old so it is quite fair to say that it has become a luxury retirement ground for Hollywood movie stars and VIPs such as, former U.S. President Gerald Ford, who also has a street named after him (see map).
